Daniel Summerhays shoots a 63 at Sanderson Farms Championship

Daniel Summerhays rebounded from a disappointing finish last week in Illinois to take the lead Thursday in the rain-delayed first round of the Sanderson Farms Championship at Madison, Miss.

Four days after squandering the final-round lead in the John Deere Classic, Summerhays shot a nine-under-par 63 to open a three-stroke lead. He had an eagle and seven birdies in a bogey-free round in steamy conditions. Will Claxton, Michael Bradley and Jonathan Randolph shot 66.

The entire afternoon group was unable to finish because of storms that hit the course in suburban Jackson. Kevin Kisner was the top player in the afternoon session, playing the first six holes in four under.

Alison Walshe, chasing her first victory in four years on the LPGA Tour, shot a six-under 65 to take a one-stroke lead after the opening round of the hot and humid Marathon Classic at Sylvania, Ohio.

Paula Creamer, the 2008 winner of what used to be known as the Jamie Farr Toledo Classic, played later in the day and shot a 66 that left her tied with Lexi Thompson and Canadian Jessica Shepley.

Top-ranked Inbee Park birdied her final two holes for a 67.

U.S. beats Cuba in baseball

Matt Chapman had a run-scoring single in the bottom of the 11th inning to give Team USA a 2-1 victory over Cuba in an international exhibition at Des Moines.

The matchup was the opener of a five-game series between Cuba and a team of American college stars — and the first between the countries on American soil since 1996.

Indianapolis Colts tight end Weslye Saunders was suspended eight games without pay after violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances a second time.

League officials did not say what substance was found in Saunders’ test. He can practice with the Colts throughout training camp and will be eligible to play in exhibition games. But he won’t be eligible to play in the regular season until after the Colts’ game Nov. 3 against Houston.

Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Josh Brent retired from football at the age of 25, saying “doing the right things in life” is more important as he prepares to defend himself against a manslaughter charge in the drunk-driving crash that killed a teammate.

Brent said he had “given a lot of thought” to his decision. His football career has been on hold since the Dec. 8 crash that killed Jerry Brown, a practice squad player, college teammate and close friend.

The Orlando Magic signed free-agent big man Jason Maxiell, adding a veteran presence to an injury-depleted frontcourt.

The 30-year-old Maxiell comes from Detroit, where he appeared in 72 games last season. He was drafted in 2005 and has spent his entire eight-year NBA career with the Pistons.

Top-seeded Roger Federer cruised past Czech qualifier Jan Hajek, 6-4, 6-3, to reach the German Tennis Championships quarterfinals at Hamburg.

Second-seeded Tommy Haas also advanced, beating Carlos Berlocq of Argentina, 6-2, 6-4.

Serena Williams cruised into the quarterfinals of the Swedish Open by beating Anna Tatishvili of Georgia, 6-2, 6-3, at Bastad.
