Angels, Indians play to scoreless tie behind Weaver, Kazmir

GOODYEAR, Ariz. — A day after the Angeles combined with the Kansas City Royals for 28 runs, the Angels and Cleveland Indians couldn’t push across one Monday, playing to a scoreless tie at Goodyear Stadium.

Most teams have agreed to end games after nine innings no matter the score in order to keep pitchers from working too many innings. As a result the Angels have played to three draws this spring, matching their number of wins.

Right-handers Jered Weaver and Jerome Williams combined to give up just eight hits while striking out 12. Weaver went the first four innings, fanning six and giving up just three hits. Williams pitched the final five.

They were matched nearly pitch for pitch by former Angel Scott Kazmir, who blanked the Angels on three hits over four innings. Kazmir, who hasn’t given up a run in 11 innings this spring, is locked in a tight battle for the final spot in the Cleveland rotation.

Catcher Chris Iannetta was the only Angel with more than one hit, going two for three.

For the Indians, leadoff hitter Michael Bourn was two for three with a double. The Indians went 0 for 14 with runners in scoring position.
