Pia Sundhage’s old and new teams play to a women’s soccer draw

Pia Sundhage led the U.S. women’s soccer team to two Olympic championships and a runner-up finish in the last World Cup. But Monday she was on the other sideline, coaching her native Sweden against the U.S. in the prestigious Algarve Cup in Lagos, Portugal.

And fittingly the match ended in a tie.

Alex Morgan, who played her first international game under Sundhage, scored in the 56th minute, matching a score in the fourth minute from Sweden’s Lisa Dahlkvist.

Dahlkvist’s score came against third-choice U.S. keeper Ashlyn Harris, who earned her first career cap at the senior level. She was playing because regular keeper Hope Solo is recovering from left wrist surgery that is expected to keep her out three to four months and backup Jill Loyden broke a bone in her left hand during training and will be out of action for up to three months.

Morgan’s goal was her 39th in 62 career caps.

With the tie, the U.S. wins its group and advances to Wednesday’s tournament final against Germany. It will be the 10th appearance in the final in 11 years for the U.S.

Sweden will play Norway in the third-place game.

The U.S. is unbeaten under Sundhage’s replacement, Tom Sermanni.
