Julius Randle shines as Lakers lose preseason game in overtime

The Lakers didn't need this again, another rookie being helped off the court, but it happened to D'Angelo Russell on Tuesday.

Russell made an unexpected exit and the Lakers lost to the Utah Jazz, 117-114, in overtime of an exhibition game at the University of Hawaii.

Russell bore the brunt of a collision after fouling Jazz center Rudy Gobert with 7:42 left in the first quarter.

"I just tried to come across with help defense and made contact with a bigger guy," Russell said. "I just fell wrong. I didn't want to give up the easy lay-up and I tried to contest it. I just got caught and landed on my tailbone."

Big games from Kobe Bryant (13 points in 21 minutes), Roy Hibbert (16 points, 11 rebounds) and Julius Randle (16 points on 7-of-12 shooting) not enough in the preseason exhibition.

Lou Williams led the Lakers with 20 points while Jazz guard Alec Burks had a game-high 27 points in 37 minutes of action.

The Lakers and Jazz are even, 78-78, at the end of the third quarter.

Roy Hibbert took an open-hand shot to the face from Trevor Booker that got Booker ejected from the game, but then Hibbert came back to throw down this monster jam.

The Jazz got a Trevor Booker tip-in at the buzzer to retake a 49-48 lead going into halftime at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.

The Lakers had rallied back from a 19-point deficit to take a 48-47 lead on a Brandon Bass bucket before the buzzer beater.

But the bigger news from the first half was an injury to Lakers top draft pick D'Angelo Russell, who left in the first quarter with a glute injury. Though it is not believed to be serious, Russell will not return tonight.

Bass was also banged up, literally, when he hit his knee hard on the court, but after being checked on by the training staff, he stayed in the game for the final 23.7 seconds.

Bass and Kobe Bryant, who started for the second consecutive game lead the Lakers with 10 points each. Bass was a perfect 3-for-3 from the floor while Bryant was 4-for-8 (1-for-4 from three-point range). Lou Williams added seven points -- all at the free throw line -- off the bench.

Metta World Peace, playing for the first time in his return with the Lakers, provided a spark off the bench with tough defense and constant hustle.

The Lakers shot 44 percent while the Jazz shot 53 percent.

The Lakers were down by nearly 20 points early in the game, but have almost clawed their way all the way back and Metta World Peace may be the reason.

Metta World Peace checked in for the first time and immediately was in the middle of the action.

Russell stayed on the court for about two minutes, rocking his body slowly and in obvious pain as teammates surrounded him. He was then helped into the locker room by two Lakers players with long-time trainer Gary Vitti close behind.

The extent of Russell's injury appears to not be serious.

Regardless, it was an uncomfortable flashback for the Lakers, a too-soon follow-up to Julius Randle's injury in the regular-season opener last October. Randle sustained a broken right tibia and was carted off via stretcher after a collision with two Houston Rockets players in the fourth quarter of that game. He did not play another minute all season.

Russell, the second pick in this year's draft, represents a large slice of the Lakers' future. He was given the starting job in the exhibition opener by Lakers Coach Byron Scott and again in Tuesday's rematch with the Jazz.

He made only two of eight attempts Sunday but was seen working on his shot long before Tuesday's tip-off at the University of Hawaii.

Gambling website gives Lakers a projected victory total of 29 1/2 games.

Bovada gave only five teams a lower mark than the Lakers while Golden State, on the other end of the spectrum, is projected for a whopping 59 1/2 wins.
