Lakers rookies are not the only ones struggling in Las Vegas summer league
The Lakers’ summer league squad (1-3) hasn’t been especially impressive, despite high hopes for rookie guard D’Angelo Russell and second-year forward Julius Randle.
Heading into the team’s final game on Friday, Russell has averaged just 9.5 points and 3.8 assists a game, while shooting 31.7% from the field and 7.7% from three-point range, along with 5.8 turnovers.
Randle, who missed almost his entire rookie season with a broken leg, has given the Lakers 11.7 points with 3.7 rebounds a night, shooting 39.3% from the field.
The Lakers selected Russell with the second overall pick in June’s 2015 NBA draft. Randle is essentially a red-shirt rookie, selected with the seventh pick in 2014.
The duo isn’t alone in struggling through the NBA’s annual Las Vegas summer league.
The top overall pick, Minnesota Timberwolves forward/center Karl Anthony-Towns, has scored 13.8 points a night while hitting 42.2% of his shots, along with 3.8 turnovers.
Zach LaVine, a second-year player taken 13th last year by the Timberwolves, has tallied an impressive 22.0 points a game, but has shot a woeful 32.4% from the floor.
Center Jahlil Okafor, taken third by the Philadelphia 76ers, has averaged 18.5 points with 8.5 rebounds through two appearances, but he’s shot just 43.8% from the field and 47.4% from the line, while turning the ball over 4.5 times.
The Lakers chose Russell over fellow 19-year-old guard Emmanuel Mudiay, who was selected seventh overall by the Denver Nuggets.
Mudiay’s stats don’t necessarily stand out either, at 12.0 points, 5.8 assists and 5.0 turnovers a game, while shooting 38.5% from the field and 14.3% from behind the arc.
Summer league is typically a mixed bag, but most of the top prospects have shown nothing more than flashes, amidst a plethora of mistakes and missed shots.
The top scorer in Las Vegas is the brother of the NBA’s most valuable player, Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry, free agent Seth Curry at 25.3 points a game.
The Spurs have gotten 22.3 points a night from UCLA’s Kyle Anderson.
Lakers’ second-year guard Jabari Brown’s 19.5 points a night is seventh best in games played through Thursday. Jordan Clarkson is 13th at 18.0 a night.
Chicago sophomore Doug McDermott has been strong as well at 18.8 points a game on 48.8% shooting from the field.
The Lakers finish summer league on Friday against the Utah Jazz.
