Lakers’ week in review

The Clippers suddenly became the center of the NBA world with the Donald Sterling controversy. Meanwhile, the Lakers were relatively quiet as they settled into their early off season.

Kentucky forward Julius Randle declared for the NBA draft, adding another high-ranked player to the pool of players in the Lakers’ range. Heading into the draft lottery, the Lakers are in sixth position with a chance to move to top three or fall back from six to seven, eight or even nine.

The Lakers hired Dan Grigsby as general counsel, promoting Jim Perzik to senior vice president of legal affairs/secretary -- although Perzik will gradually reduce his workload, starting in January.

One big question for the franchise, as it makes plans for the 2014-15 season, is what can the Lakers expect to get from Kobe Bryant after Achilles and knee injuries?

Bryant made two appearances in commercials this past week, including a cameo in a Nike soccer commercial, and a spot for Panini collectibles (also soccer-related).

The NBA announced Phoenix Suns guard Goran Dragic as the league’s most improved player this past season. Lakers guard Jodie Meeks also received minor consideration for the award.

Nick Young, who led the Lakers in scoring and technical fouls this past season, joined Jordan Farmar at Lakers and Dodgers games.

Dan D’Antoni, brother and assistant of Lakers Coach Mike D’Antoni, was hired as head coach of Marshall University.

Finally, Lakers executive-owner Jeanie Buss took some time to reminisce about life at Pickfair mansion.
