Alabama’s Jalen Hurts pays off bet with Charles Barkley — but gets the last laugh
Jalen Hurts paid up on a bet he placed with Charles Barkley last year, but the Alabama quarterback still got the last laugh.
In November, before the annual Iron Bowl game between rivals Alabama and Auburn, Barkley, an Auburn alumnus, and Hurts made a bet on whose team would win: The loser would have to wear the rival team’s jersey. NBA commentator Barkley would have to wear an Alabama jersey on TV; Hurts an Auburn jersey on Alabama’s campus. Auburn ended up winning the game 26-14, handing Alabama its only loss last season.
So on Thursday, Hurts paid off the bet.
Alabama football’s Twitter account posted a video of Hurts wearing the Auburn jersey, but with a twist at the end.
Hurts gives a shoutout to Barkley and congratulates the Auburn community on a successful football season, but adds a “Roll Tide” at the end while carrying the College Football Playoff championship trophy in his backpack. There’s even the jingle to “Sweet Home Alabama” playing in the background.
Hurts and backup quarterback Tua Tagovailoa led Alabama to the team’s 17th national title a few weeks after the Auburn game.
Barkley is a passionate Auburn fan but is also fond of Hurts. He applauded him for his efforts and spoke highly of him during Thursday’s “Inside the NBA”.
