Racing! Del Mar finishes a great meeting with three stakes races

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter and it’s time to congratulate Del Mar on their best fall meeting … ever.

Watching Mubtaahij finish third in the Native Diver Stakes at Del Mar reminded me how rarely we see horses from the Breeders’ Cup Classic until early the following year, if at all. Mubtaahij finished eighth in the Classic but trainer Bob Baffert decided to run him back, unlike Collected and West Coast, who he is eyeing for the Pegasus in January.

If you look at the 11 entrants in the Classic, only three didn’t pack it in the for the year. In fact, two — Arrogate and Churchill — packed it in for a career. Four appear headed to the Pegasus as Gun Runner and Gunnevera look to be going to Gulfstream to join the Baffert pair. Gun Runner, of course, is the presumptive Pegasus favorite before becoming a stallion.

As for the other two still to run this year, there is Win The Space, who will be on the turf today at Del Mar in the Seabiscuit Handicap. The other is War Decree, who is penciled in for the Hong Kong Cup on Dec. 10.

Last year, in the Classic at Santa Anita, the results were about the same. Of the nine horses that ran, two retired after the race: Melatonin and Frosted. Four went on to the Pegasus: Arrogate, California Chrome, Keen Ice and War Story.

Keen Ice and War Story actually did some prep racing between the Breeders’ Cup and Pegasus. Keen Ice ran in the Harlan’s Holiday Stakes at Gulfstream on Dec. 17 and War Story sneaked in two preps: Cigar Mile on Nov. 26 and the Queen’s County Stakes on Dec. 17, both at Aqueduct.

Hoppertunity also did not finish off last year at the Classic, running in the Clark Handicap at Churchill on Nov. 25.

What are you to make of all this? Probably very little. Although how tough a campaign they had, likely plays part in the decision.

Some trainers like to try and keep their horses sharp, and when you consider the diminished competition after the Breeders’ Cup, it’s not a bad idea. Or, some trainers like to freshen up their horses, so that they can be sharp early the next year.

When you figure it out, let us know.

No questions left behind

On Saturday, I asked readers if they had any questions that aren’t too complicated and I will try and get them answered. Got some good ones already. So, if you have something you always wanted to know about horse racing, ask away at johnacherwa@gmail.com.

Del Mar review

Mo Town was impressive in Saturday’s feature of features by winning the $300,000 Hollywood Derby over 1 1/8 miles on the turf. The son of Mo Town, if you didn’t figure that out, rallied from next to last to win by a length over Channel Maker. Big Score was third and favored Sharp Samurai finished fourth.

“He broke slow, so I didn’t panic with him,” said winning jockey John Velazquez. “I let him settle and run right along. Then when I asked him he responded. He responded very well.”

Trainer Anthony Dutrow was, not surprising, happy for shipping the horse West.

“My first trip to Del Mar and the people out here are so nice I can’t wait to get back some day,” Dutrow said. “I don’t know how this turf course plays, but I knew at the top of the stretch Mo Town had a lot of work to do and I’m glad he was up to it.”

Mo Town paid $6.20, $4.60 and $3.60.

In the first stakes of the day, the $100,000 Native Diver Stakes over 1 1/8 miles, Prime Attraction drew out in the stretch to win by 2½ lengths over Irish Freedom. Prime Attraction was also entered in Friday’s Hollywood Turf Cup but trainer Jim Cassidy clearly made the right decision to have him run over the dirt.

“It worked out perfectly for me today,” said winning jockey Victor Espinoza. “The speed was inside me so I could just let him go along there early. And when you can do that, he finishes strong. Just like he did today.”

Top Of The Game, the 2-1 second choice, finished fourth. Prime Attraction paid $16, $6 and $3.40.

In the last race of the day, Daddy Is A Legend won the $100,000 Jimmy Durante Stakes for 2-year-old fillies over one mile on the turf.

Jockey Joe Bravo took Legend wide into the stretch and rallied past everyone beating Data Dependent by a length. Raucous was third and Lexington Grace fourth.

“I was following Chad Brown’s horse (Data Dependent) around there and when she went I went right behind her,” Bravo said. “When we hit the stretch, I tipped her out and it was bye-bye. It was her race from there. She’s special.”

Daddy Is A Legend paid $7.40, $4.60 and $3.20 for trainer George Weaver.

Del Mar preview

It’s a pretty even field with 12 runners scheduled to go in the $300,000 Matriarch Stakes at Del Mar. The one-mile race on the turf for fillies and mares is set for the seventh, at about 3:30 p.m. Cambodia is the morning-line favorite at 3-1. The 5-year-old mare has never finished out of the money in 11 turf races, winning six of them.

She’s coming off a third place in the Breeders’ Cup Fillies and Mares Turf. It was her only loss in three races at Del Mar. Expected to push her is Kitten’s Roar, who has seven wins and seven places in 17 lifetime races. She has won more than $800,000.

The first stakes on the card is $200,000 Seabiscuit Handicap. The 2-1 favorite is Om, even though he hasn’t won since Dec. 2015. But he mostly runs in graded stakes and is often in the money.

His competition in the 1 1/16 mile turf race should come from the barn of Phil D’Amato, who has both Pee Wee Reese (5-2) and Hunt (3-1). PWR has won four of five turf races and Hunt is six for 23 lifetime. The race is the fifth at about 2:30 p.m.

The final race of the meeting is the Cecille B. DeMille Stakes for 2-year-olds going a mile on the turf. Analyze It, for trainer Chad Brown, is the 5-2 favorite. He won his only race by 6¼ lengths at Belmont. Inscom, winner of one of three and owned by Kaleem Shah, is at 7-2.

Bob Ike’s DM play of day

THIRD RACE: No. 7 Pee Wee Reese (3-1)

Three scratches from the original field of nine, Pee Wee Reese can wire this field as the likely second-betting choice. The front-running Phil D'Amato-trained colt catches a field without much early zip, is capable of firing fresh and has won over this course. Looks like a "single" in the Pick 5. Be back for Santa Anita on Dec. 26.

Saturday Result: As advertised, Daddy Is a Legend ($7.40) unleashed her wicked stretch kick to win the Jimmy Durante Stakes in very impressive style.

Bob Ike is a Partner/VP of Horsebills.com and the proprietor of BobIkePicks.com (full-card picks, 3 Best Plays and betting strategy).

Ed Burgart’s LA play of day

NINTH RACE: No. 7 Rhemy Marko (7-2)

He ran far better than his last line indicates when he stumbled badly while away poorly from the rail post. His rider then guided him to the inside where the gelding showed terrific energy on the gallop out. He now moves to post seven and finished second two outs ago vs. J Fire Up, a two-time futurity winner.
