Racing! Gun Runner shows why he is the best

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as we spend a day at Gulfstream.

OK, the thing you are most interested in, how Gun Runner won the $16-million Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream. For that, we’re going to send you to our main website. So just click here.

And while you’re there, you can read all about Cal Cup day by my colleague Eric Sondheimer. Or you can just click here.

Here are some highlights of a day at Gulfstream:

--I was able to avoid the $20 parking fee by just telling them I was with the media. (Don’t try this at home, it might not work.) When I told the attendant, he thought about it for a second, looked at the line of cars behind me, and waved me in. Now, it should be pointed out that parking at Gulfstream is usually free.

--Upon arriving at the media will-call stand, I found out there was a problem with many of the credentials to cover the event. The problem was they weren’t there. But they had a fix. They gave me a picture-less credential that says Media Gnazzo. So, if I’m going to spend the day as a Gnazzo, I should probably figure out what it means. I discover that Gnazzo is “a Miami-based Public Relations, Events & Marketing agency that specializes in brand imaging, events and public relations development for the fashion, beauty, hospitality and lifestyle industries.” Obviously, they don’t specialize in delivering media credentials.

--Experiencing the Gulfstream drag is much worse in person than on TV. Once I got to the windowless media bunker it said zero minutes to the second post. I hustled outside so I could actually watch a race live. I got to the rail and waited … and waited … and waited. I realized how difficult it must be for the TVG guys to try and determine when to cut to other races when they don’t actually know when the race will be run.

--So, then I started timing the drag. In the third race, from the time the post went to zero to the actual start of the load was 6:15. (That’s minutes and seconds, not hours and minutes.) While that may normally be alarming if you are covering a big race on deadline, but I knew NBC would make sure the Pegasus would go off close to the scheduled time.

--The drag on the fourth race was a little over six minutes. Time to stop timing.

--Noticed the ad-rich $10 Commemorative Program for Pegasus day had a full-page ad from Adena Springs calling the race “The work of a visionary” with a picture of Frank Stronach. Frank owns Adena Springs. And Gulfstream. And Santa Anita. And …

--I lied. I timed the fifth race. The drag was 6:40.

--There are five TVs in the windowless media bunker at Gulfstream. Four of them were tuned to Gulfstream. (Got no problem with that.) The fifth was tuned to Aqueduct. After the racing at Aqueduct ended, the TV switched to Gulfstream. Don’t try and tell me East Coast bias didn’t cost the Bolt D’Oro the well-deserved 2-year-old male Eclipse Award.

--When it listed four minutes to post in the sixth race, it’s clear there was enough time to leave the windowless media bunker to tour the facility and get back in time to watch the race on TV. And that was correct. Have to say, saw lots of empty carousels in Silks, the on-site simulcast facility. There were a few empty tables by the paddock and there just wasn’t the crush of people you would expect at a big event. No long betting lines, either.

--Some folks I talked to said it definitely appeared to be less crowded than last year when the race had the great matchup of Arrogate and California Chrome. Track official offered only an estimate of the crowd, which was down imperceptibly. The track also announced all-source handle was up about 4%, but did not release on-track handle.

--Last thought. Really, back here again next year when you have that great looking track in Arcadia that can hold oodles (the technical term for a lot) of people.

Santa Anita preview

Santa Anita settles back to nine-race card starting at 12:30 p.m. The highlight, which isn’t terribly high, is the $75,000 Clockers’ Corner Stakes for older horses down the 61/2-furlong hillside course.

The favorite, at 8-5, is Calculator, who has run only five of his 19 races on turf. But he won two of those races. It’s a short field of six. Flavien Prat gets the ride for Peter Miller. Fly To Mars, also running for Miller, is the second favorite at 5-2. He won two races down the hill last year. Eclipse winner Evin Roman gets the ride.

There are four turf races — the first, fourth, seventh and ninth — on the card and field sizes are OK. They are, in sequential order: 9, 6, 7, 6, 9, 9, 9, 10, 11 (3 also eligible).

Bob Ike’s SA play of the day

NINTH RACE: No. 2 Concur (5-2)

Sophomore colt from the Phil D'Amato stable appears set to stretch out and try turf in this maiden special weight event. He looks like the speed of the race while drawn inside, switches to Prat and is bred to go long on grass. Let's close out the week with a front-running victory.

Saturday Result: Camino Del Paraiso got nailed on the wire in race 8, but at least it was by Rye, the horse we mentioned as his main threat.
