Philip Rivers, Chargers agree on extension

Philip Rivers and the Chargers have agreed to a four-year contract extension, the team announced Saturday night. The question is, will the quarterback finish his career in San Diego or Los Angeles?

The deal for the 33-year-old Rivers, the team’s starter since 2006, reportedly is worth $84 million, with $65 million guaranteed. He is entering the final year of a six-year, $93-million deal he signed in August 2009.

The extension comes as team chairman Dean Spanos has angered many Chargers fans by exploring a move to the L.A. area.

A mixed debut for Winston

Jameis Winston produced mixed results at best in his first NFL action for Tampa Bay, while Teddy Bridgewater had Minnesota’s passing attack in prime form to spark the Vikings in a 26-16 exhibition victory over the Buccaneers in Minneapolis.

Winston, the former Heisman Trophy winner who was the first pick in the draft out of Florida State, played the first half and completed nine of 19 passes for 131 yards. He had a pass intercepted, mishandled two snaps that led to a total of 19 lost yards and threw several passes well off target.

Bridgewater was seven for eight for 86 yards and backup Shaun Hill competed eight of nine for 104 yards and two touchdowns.

In other exhibitions:

Brian Hoyer threw a 58-yard touchdown pass to Cecil Shorts III on Houston’s first drive, and the Texans went on to beat San Francisco, 23-10, in Houston.

Arizona quarterback Carson Palmer, playing his first game since tearing an ACL last Nov. 9, completed all four of his passes for 77 yards in leading an 80-yard touchdown drive, his only series of the night in the Cardinals’ 34-19 loss to Kansas City at Glendale, Ariz. Chiefs backup Chase Daniel threw for three touchdowns.

White faces surgery

Rookie wide receiver Kevin White, the seventh overall pick in this year’s draft, will have surgery on his left shin to repair a stress fracture and will start the regular season on the Chicago Bears’ physically unable to perform list. It’s possible he could miss the entire season, but the Bears are holding out hope he can return for the second half of the season.

Giants lose safeties

New York Giants rookie safety Mykkele Thompson will miss the season because of an Achilles’ tendon injury, and projected starting safety Landon Collins will be out at least a week with a knee sprain, the team said.

Paulsen out for year

Washington tight end Logan Paulsen will have surgery for a toe injury and will miss the entire season. Another Redskins tight end, Niles Paul, is also out for the year after breaking an ankle.

New Orleans running back C.J. Spiller reportedly underwent arthroscopic knee surgery Friday but is expected to be back for the team’s regular-season opener. . . . Terrelle Pryor, the former quarterback trying to restart his career as a wide receiver, rejoined the Cleveland Browns after missing more than a week or practice with a hamstring injury. . . . Jacksonville safety Johnathan Cyprien (broken finger) and tight end Julius Thomas (broken hand) are expected to miss the rest of the exhibition season
