Rams punter Johnny Hekker recognized as NFL special teams player of month
The Rams did not win a game in December, but that did not stop punter Johnny Hekker from gaining recognition as the NFC special teams player of the month.
Hekker, voted to the Pro Bowl for the third time in four seasons, led the NFL with a 47.8-yard average this season. He was also first in net average (46.0 yards a kick).
Hekker, 26, punted 98 times. San Francisco’s Bradley Pinion, who punted 100 times, was the only player with more attempts.
Hekker set an NFL record by putting 51 of 98 punts inside the 20-yard line.
His longest punt of the season traveled 78 yards and none of his attempts were blocked. He also completed one of two passes.
