Galaxy may be adding another weapon for stretch drive
The rich are apparently about to get richer. And we’re not talking about Mitt Romney’s proposed tax cuts.
The Galaxy, the defending Major League Soccer champion and the league’s hottest team over the last three months, is nearing a deal with Swedish international Christian Wilhelmsson.
Wilhelmsson, a winger who played in a World Cup and three European Championships for Sweden, has been training with the team. A team spokesman Sunday denied an Internet report that the Galaxy and Wilhelmsson had already reached a deal but said his signing appear to be imminent.
“It’s closer to be done than not,” he said.
The MLS transfer window closes Sept. 14, which is when the Galaxy plays its next game. The team is 10-3-2 since early June, entering Sunday three points out of second place in the MLS’ Western Conference.
The addition of the speedy Wilhelmsson 32, would strengthen a team that has already gotten career highs for goals from midfielders David Beckham and Juninho while Robbie Keane ranks among the league leaders in both goals and assists.
“Christian is a player that we are interested in and that we have in training with us right now,” Galaxy Coach Bruce Arena said. “Should an official arrangement be reached we will make an announcement at that time.”
