Kings agree to 10-year extension with goaltender Jonathan Quick

The Kings had never done a 10-year deal. Not with defenseman Drew Doughty, not with center Anze Kopitar and not even going back to the days of the hockey legend himself, Wayne Gretzky.

That barrier was broken with the team’s 10-year contract extension with Conn Smythe-winning goalie Jonathan Quick. Those familiar with the deal but not authorized to speak said it was worth in excess of $50 million but tapered off in the final three years. Other reports put it at about $58 million.

Quick was named the most valuable player in the playoffs, helping lead the Kings to their first Stanley Cup in 45 years.

“We are very happy to have a long-term agreement in place with one of our top young players,” said Kings president and general manager Dean Lombardi. “At this point we prefer to comment more on or around July 1.”

July 1 is the first day contracts can be signed, under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement. Quick also represented the Kings in the All-Star game this past season and was named a second team All Star and finished second in the Vezina Trophy voting.

The extension kicks in after next season and ties Quick to the Kings through the 2022-23 season. He had 16 wins in the playoffs, with a goals-against average of 1.41 and a .946 save percentage.
