Buccaneers’ new helmet and logo: What will they look like?

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are getting new helmets with a new logo. That much we know.

We also know that the current team colors of red and pewter aren’t expected to change much. And we need to keep reminding ourselves that the look is being described as new, as in not old.

In other words, don’t expect ol’ Bucco Bruce to come riding back in on a Creamsicle-colored wave Thursday night when Bucs legend Warren Sapp unveils the helmet and logo on NFL Network.

I know ... I’m bummed too.

But Sapp has been teasing the thing on Twitter, and he seems pretty psyched.

It will be the first redesign for the Bucs’ logo since 1997, when they switched colors and scrapped their original logo for a flag bearing a jolly roger. They sported that look while winning the only Super Bowl in franchise history following the 2002 season.

But three losing seasons in a row — including two 4-12 efforts — may have suggested that it’s time for a fresh start. The team already has a new coach in Lovie Smith and new general manager in Jason Licht.

And later this week it will have a new look.
