Oscar De La Hoya elected to International Boxing Hall of Fame

Oscar De La Hoya was elected to the International Boxing Hall of Fame Tuesday, capping a career spawned in East Los Angeles that featured a 1992 Olympic gold medal in Barcelona and multiple world titles.

“This is the dream of everyone who puts on a pair of gloves and steps between the ropes .. .through the good and the bad, you always hope … you put on good fights, entertained the fans, and will be remembered for what you did in the ring,” De La Hoya said in a statement. “To know that I will be in the Hall of Fame … is humbling.”

De La Hoya (39-6, 30 knockouts) retired following his 2008 loss to Manny Pacquiao after winning world titles in six weight classes and beating the likes of Julio Cesar Chavez, Pernell Whitaker, Fernando Vargas and Genaro Hernandez.

He proceeded to form powerful Golden Boy Promotions in Los Angeles, which promotes such fighters as Floyd Mayweather Jr., Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Danny Garcia, Adrien Broner and Leo Santa Cruz.

De La Hoya’s induction class includes his 1999 opponent Felix Trinidad and former super-middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe. They will be inducted in ceremonies June 5-8 in Canastota, N.Y.
