&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Talk about being in the zone, &amp;lt;runtime:topic id=”PESPT000010044”&amp;gt;Doug Fister&amp;lt;/runtime:topic&amp;gt; was really in the zone on Thursday.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The Detroit pitcher set an American League record with nine consecutive strikeouts in the &amp;lt;runtime:topic id=”ORSPT000011”&amp;gt;Tigers&amp;lt;/runtime:topic&amp;gt;’ 5-4 win over &amp;lt;runtime:topic id=”ORSPT000105”&amp;gt;Kansas&amp;lt;/runtime:topic&amp;gt; City, but wasn’t even aware of it until the fans at Tiger Stadium gave him a standing ovation. He even waved off his own first baseman, &amp;lt;runtime:topic id=”PESPT000010042”&amp;gt;Prince Fielder&amp;lt;/runtime:topic&amp;gt;, who wanted him to pause and take in the moment.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;”Honestly, I had no idea,” Fister told the Associated Press. “Prince was yelling at me to step off during the inning, and I kind of looked at him. Normally, he’ll do that, to slow me down, if I’m getting too quick .... I thought that was kind of what he was doing there. He just said, ‘Hey, step off.’ I look at him, and he kept looking at me, and he said, ‘Aw, I’ll tell you later.’ “&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The nine straight strikeouts, which started with the final out in the fourth inning and ended with the second out in the seventh inning, broke the record of eight held by several pitchers, including most recently Kansas City’s Blake Stein on June 17, 2001. The National League record belongs to Tom Seaver, with 10.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;”I said, ‘Congratulations, man.
