Michelle Wie drops out of U.S. Women’s Open; Inbee Park in lead

The tweet from Michelle Wie says it all.

The 23-year-old former phenom withdrew from the U.S. Women’s Open on Saturday morning, citing illness.

Wie was scheduled to finish the last hole of the fog-suspended second round at Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y.

Her premature departure might also have had something to do with the fact that, at 11 over par, she wasn’t going to make the cut.

There are no words to explain how disappointed I am in myself right now...— Michelle Wie (@themichellewie) June 28, 2013

With no wins since 2010 and a string of disappointing finishes this season, Wie had slipped to No. 82 in the world rankings. She started out the U.S. Open with a quadruple bogey on her first hole.

Inbee Park, looking to win a historic third consecutive major in 2013, held the lead at nine under and was scheduled to tee off at 12:40 p.m. EDT. She was followed by In-Kyung Kim at seven under and Jodi Ewart Shadoff at five under.
