Bryan brothers survive scare at U.S. Open

NEW YORK -- Bob and Mike Bryan, the twin brothers from Camarillo and the top-ranked doubles team, survived a third-round match against Canadians Daniel Nestor and Vasek Pospisil on Sunday at the U.S. Open.

The Bryans came away with a 6-7 (1), 7-5, 6-2 win over the Canadians.

The Californians are aiming for a 2013 Grand Slam sweep. They’ve already won at the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon this season. Nestor ended the match with his eighth double fault.

Advancing in men’s singles was fifth-seeded Tomas Berdych, who once upset Roger Federer at Wimbledon and had no trouble knocking out Frenchman Julien Benneteau, 6-0, 6-3, 6-2, on Sunday.

“It was good,” Berdych said. It was a bit too hot, too humid but otherwise, my tennis was good.”

Defending men’s champion Andy Murray beat German’s Florian Mayer, 7-6 (2), 6-2, 6-2, in another men’s third-round match. It was the second Mayer in a row beaten by Murray, who had eliminated Leonardo Mayer in the second round.
