Organizations: Boy Scouts wrapping gifts for donations
The Delphi Academy’s Boy Scout Troop 555 is once again wrapping gifts for shoppers from Dec. 13 to 24 at the Sport Chalet, 975 Foothill Bvd., La Cañada Flintridge. The schedule will be posted at Sport Chalet.
This is Boy Scout Troop 555’s ninth year helping the community and Sport Chalet, which offers the complimentary gift wrapping to Sport Chalet customers for a donation to Troop 555. The Scouts will wrap everything from the smallest gift to the largest items such as bicycles and ping-pong tables.
The Scouts use the money from donations to help pay for their upcoming camping adventures and are especially motivated as they have planned a “Road Trip” for 2011 touring the Western states, which includes camping at the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, Mount Rushmore and Yellowstone National Park. They will have dinner at the top of the Seattle Space Needle and on the way home, visit a cranberry farm in Oregon and explore the many sights in San Francisco.
Nominations accepted for legacy awards
Over the past several years, the YWCA of Glendale has honored Women of Heart & Excellence at the annual Legacy Luncheon. The purpose of this award is to recognize exceptional and dynamic women in the local communities, whose work and/or volunteer service are creating legacies of love, strength and leadership.
The event also helps raise money for the Domestic Violence Project and EncorePlus, which is a breast and cervical cancer screening program for low-income women. These two nationally recognized programs serve women and children not only in Glendale, but also in the surrounding communities.
Nominations are being accepted until Jan. 10. Recipients will be honored at the annual Legacy Luncheon on March 31 at the Castaway Restaurant in Burbank.

Residents can design T-shirt for dash
The fourth annual Glendale Downtown Dash event will have a T-shirt designed by a community resident.
The Downtown Glendale Merchant’s Assn. hosts Glendale’s Downtown Dash every year. It’s a 5K Run/Walk to benefit Glendale Adventist Medical Center’s Stroke Services for the community.
Community members can enter the Downtown Dash T-shirt Design Contest now through Jan. 31. Contestants can go online to https://www.GlendaleDowntownDash.com to get official contest rules.
The winner will receive a $100 Visa gift card and a T-shirt signed by the 2011 Dash Committee.
Glendale’s Downtown Dash will be held on March 13 and will start in front of the Alex Theatre, 216 N. Brand Blvd., Glendale. The run/walk will go through the Americana at Brand. Registration will open at 7 a.m. and opening ceremonies will start at 8:15 a.m.

McGroarty Arts Center has holiday boutique
McGroarty Arts Center in Tujunga will host its annual Holiday Boutique from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec.11. Admission is free. The event features local vendors, hand-made gifts, live music, a bake sale and the Chili Cook-off.
Also available for sale will be organic honey, all natural skin care products, handmade jewelry, California landscape and still life oil paintings and watercolors, ornaments, soap, candles and more.
Homemade chili will be served in a one-of-a-kind, handmade ceramic bowl made by the arts center’s ceramics department. Not only do patrons get to keep the chili bowl, but they can fill it with any one of the dozens of varieties of chili available. Flavors and types of chili range from spicy and adventurous to more traditional and tame. All chili purchases come with fresh baked corn bread and condiments. Crowd favorites for sale have included blanco white bean chili, vegetarian and elk.
In addition to events, festivals, concerts and exhibits, McGroarty Arts Center offers low-cost art instruction for children and adults in visual and performing arts, music and ceramics. The center is run by a nonprofit organization in partnership with the city of Los Angeles, Department of Cultural Affairs. Proceeds from this fundraiser support programs at McGroarty.
