Letters: Airlines have to list the total fare, but hotels’ add-on charges remain surprising

Airlines are now required to list the total fare, including taxes and fees, although baggage charges are variable.

Hotels, it seems, march to a different drummer. The room rate is given, which in the end doesn’t mean much (no clue as to what the bottom line will be). Some of the add-ons: parking fees, resort fees, fee for holding your baggage because your room is not ready. Also, you’ll be tipping everyone you come in contact with.

I will request no resort fees because I do not use the pool and towel, lounge chairs, spa, gym or golf facilities.

I don’t think David Tulanian (Letters, “McNoFunfaces,” May 22) need worry about the British naming their new polar exploration ship the Sir David Attenborough.

It is only fitting to honor Sir David, a man who has spent his life studying and reporting on the natural world.

In the common culture, the ship will always be known as Boaty McBoatface.

More car tips

I wanted to thank Catharine Hamm for her story “9 Tips for Renting a Car” (May 22).

It made me think about my own experiences and advice I have given people and inspired me to write a new article, “8 Ways to Save on Car Rentals.”

Among my tips: When you’re booking a car, vary the pickup and dropoff times to see if you can achieve savings. Also, you may not need a car for a full day, so consider a service such as Zipcar (www.zipcar.com) that rents by the hour. There is a small fee to join.

You can see I have some additional advice to give. Thanks again!
