A do-it-yourself and 4x4 tour of beautiful Costa Rica

Visit a volcano, hike through a cloud forest and stretch out on a sandy beach during a weeklong do-it-yourself driving tour of Costa Rica.

The deal: The land-only package is $540 per person, double occupancy, and includes rental of a four-wheel-drive vehicle, two nights’ accommodations in the capital, San Jose (also Costa Rica’s largest city), one night at the Arenal Paraíso Hotel in the Arenal Volcano area, two nights at Hotel Claro de Luna in Monteverde near the Cloud Forest Reserve, two nights at Hotel Giada in Guanacaste province near Samara Beach, as well as health and travel insurance.

Details: Travelers are met at the international airport in San José by a representative of the Ecological Adventures tour company, taken to the car-rental office to pick up a Daihatsu Terios 4x4 and driven to the San Jose hotel. Then they’re on their own, with vouchers for the hotel stays.

Restrictions: International air transportation is not included. A single room is $735 per person; a triple room is $459 per person. Prices are valid through Nov. 30.
