South Africa: Gourmet cooking, sipping in Cape Town’s wine country
Travelers who want to go deep into Cape Town’s culinary culture may want to consider a South Africa tour that features the fine points of traditional curry, a chance to watch the country’s top chefs cook, and regional foods like biltong and bobotie to sample -- all washed down with plenty of locally made wines.
Tour company Red Savannah has designed an eight-day Gourmet South Africa tour that’s all about teaching and tasting -- and a bit of relaxing too. Participants stay at luxury resort Cellars-Hohenort four nights to explore the city’s Malay Quarter where a local teaches them to make rotis, samosas and curry. Then it’s off to spend time with some pro chefs: Luke Dale Roberts shows how he prepares dishes in his test kitchen, and Bruce Robertson creates a five-course lunch at his home.
The tour spends time in Winelands too, for tasting wine, chocolate, cheese and olives, all of which are produced in the area. Here guests stay at Babylonstoren, a 250-acre working farm, where they learn about winemaking and farm foods. Travelers may plan their visit to the Good Food & Wine Show where top chefs, including Gordon Ramsay, appear from May 29 to June 1.
When: Travelers may choose their own dates and itinerary.
Price: $7,945 per person, double occupancy. It includes meals, lodgings, tours and ground transportation; international airfare is extra.
