Airstream trailer, a road icon, stops at MoMA
Long before Hummers, SUVs and RVs roamed the Earth, there was Bambi, the compact “tin can” Airstream trailer whose tires first touched asphalt in 1960.
Now this silver road warrior sits in the lobby of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, where it has been elevated to a work of art. “On the Road” features the newly acquired trailer and automobile posters from the museum’s collection.
The Airstream Bambi Travel Trailer joins six others in MoMA’s collection: a Cisitalia “202” GT (1946), a Willys-Overland Jeep (1953), a Volkswagen Beetle (1959), a Jaguar E-type Roadster (1963), a Ferrari Formula 1 racing car 641/2 (1990) and a Smart Car (2002). The exhibit runs through Nov. 12.
