August sale on rooms on Hawaii’s Big Island

King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel in Kailua Village on Hawaii’s Big Island trims 25 percent off room rates during August. This hotel has bounced back from the March tsunami caused by the deadly Japan quake that damaged its lobby, restaurant and grounds -- and soon will have a new name too.

The deal: The Summer Promotion cuts room rates and provides free buffet breakfasts for children 12 years old and younger with a paying adult breakfast.

A lot has happened at the hotel this year. The tsunami-related flooding hit after the hotel spent $35 million renovating its 452 rooms in 2010. Post-tsunami fixes required more work, and now more change is on the way. The hotel recently announced on Facebook a partnership with Courtyard by Marriott, which, among other things, will make its name even longer when it’s rebranded as Courtyard King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.

When: The offer is good for stays through Aug. 31.

Tested: I checked online and found availability Aug. 18-21 for rooms that accommodate two adults and two children. The cheapest rooms -- with a king-sized bed and sofabed or two queen beds -- cost $138 a night (usually $185 a night); a room with a partial ocean view goes for $149 a night (usually $199 a night); prices exclude tax. This could be a good deal for families taking a late-summer break.
