L.A. airport commissioners have decided to double the fare to $10 each way on the Westwood FlyAway bus from UCLA to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) rather than eliminate the money-losing service. The action, which doesn’t require approval from the Los Angeles City Council, was voted on Monday.
[Updated at 12:15 p.m. July 13: The fare change will take effect Aug. 1, LAX said in its Twitter feed and Facebook page.]
Neither the FlyAway website nor the recorded information [(866) 435-9529] reflected this change Tuesday afternoon, and LAX spokeswoman Katherine Alvarado said she wasn’t sure exactly when the fare increase goes into effect. However, the new price was announced on the airport’s Twitter feed @LAX_Official and its Facebook page.
Airport commissioners decided to continue the shuttle service for at least six more months with the higher fare, the Daily Breeze reported.
Commissioners earlier had recommended pulling the plug on the Westside bus service because it had lost an estimated $8.5 million since it began in June 2007. UCLA students argued that they need the service even though ridership has remained low. The FlyAway picks up and drops off passengers outside UCLA Parking Structure 32 at Kinross Avenue, a block west of Gayley Avenue.
One-way FlyAway fares from Irvine ($25), Van Nuys ($7) and Union Station ($7) remain unchanged.
