KOA campground goes ‘glamp’ with bedrooms, zip line and more

Glamour camping, or “glamping,” is getting family-friendly. At the new Ventura Ranch KOA in Santa Paula, Calif., campers who would rather sleep in a bed than on the ground have their choice of “glamour” teepees that sleep as many as eight; lodges with private bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchens; or tents equipped with fridges and microwaves.
The kid-friendly, 76-acre campground also offers a tandem 800-foot zip line, a giant jumping pillow, a rock climbing wall and a “Bigfoot Night Adventure” on weekends that takes campers into the woods with flashlights to see where the legendary “Bigfoot” sleeps and scratches his back on the trees.
Owned by a former KOA senior executive, now a franchisee, who bought the Santa Paula site and upgraded it with extras, the Ventura Ranch KOA is an answer to the two most popular requests from campers, the owner said.
“More and more people wanted to have a private bathroom and more exciting things for children to do than a traditional playground,” said Scott Cory.
Info: Ventura Ranch KOA, 7400 Pine Grove Rd., Santa Paula; (800) 562-1899. Teepees $59-$89 a night, lodges $139-$179, tents $99.
