Mexico: Cabo resort lets guests swim with whale sharks
Swim with whale sharks this winter in the Gulf of California on a new sea life program organized by Esperanza, an Auberge Resort in Cabo San Lucas in Mexico‘s Baja California.
The program, which continues through March, takes place near La Paz, where the whale sharks feed on plankton in the rich breeding grounds of the Gulf of California, also called the Sea of Cortez.
The eight-hour sea life trip is one of several new marine adventure programs offered at Esperanza. A part of the bookings from the activities is donated to local ocean conservation groups.
“Because of our relationships with local guides, guests can explore the waters of our seaside location, while also giving back to oceanic organizations,” said Marc Rodriguez, general manager of Esperanza.
Participants use wet suits and snorkel equipment for the whale shark swim and can also try their hands at underwater photography and videography. Spotter planes and local guides help locate the creatures, which can be as long as 40 feet.
Rates at Esperanza start at $595 a night during mid-season, October through December; and at $995 during high season, which begins in late December.
