Hawaii: New retreat center on Maui keeps it wonderfully small

Lumeria Maui started life in 1909 as a home for old plantation workers, built by one of Hawaii’s big sugar families. In its 100-plus years, the North Shore property had been repurposed as military housing and then as dorms for a women’s college. Now it emerges as a small, graceful retreat center that accents local culture and relaxation under the moniker “edventure.” Prices start relatively small too, with an introductory offer of $299 a night.

The deal: Lumeria sits on six acres facing the ocean in Makawao on the island of Maui. It has just 24 rooms and bungalows and is billed as a “luxury educational retreat center,” according to information provided by Lumeria. What’s there to learn? Instructors lead classes on everything from yoga to surfing. Each stay comes with free breakfast and free yoga and meditation classes.

The property is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places as the Fred C. Baldwin Memorial Home. The Craftsman-style compound was redone by interior designer Xorin Balbes, author of the book “SoulSpace” (about how to make your home truly reflect the lives of those inside) and founder of design firm Temple Home. Tested: This deal has a nice, long window period for first-time or veteran Maui-bound travelers who want something new. I checked online for availability and found a room for June 4-8 with two beds or one king for $209 a night plus tax, lower than the advertised price. Lumeria looks like a sweet and beautifully restored alternative to the tower-hotel experience many have when they visit Hawaii.
