California: Year-round ice-skating rink to open in Big Bear

Big Bear Lake is getting ready to offer some cold comfort all year long. The Southern California resort town known for its ski resorts and cool mountain climate will open a new indoor ice-skating rink Saturday.
The 1,300-square-foot rink in the Big Bear Funplex will be open daily for recreational skating. “Big Bear will now have a piece of winter 365 days a year,” owner Lisa Brogan said in a statement. Brogan and her husband, Raymond, will operate the business, called simply the Ice Rink.
It has been awhile since Big Bear visitors and locals have had an opportunity to strap on a pair of skates year-round. The new rink opens at the site of the Iceland Skating Rink, which closed in the 1970s, according to Big Bear Lake Resort Assn. spokesman Dan McKernan.
The skating rink is at 40679 Big Bear Blvd. Hours are 2 to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays; 2 to 10 p.m. Fridays; 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays.
A session costs $10 for adults (13 years old and older) and $8 for children (12 and younger). A family value pack for two adults and two kids goes for $30. Skate rentals are included in the price, and skaters can request a helmet, wrist guards and knee pads for free. (Other activities in the Funplex include a bowling alley, laser tag and bumper cars.)
