Former Marriott hotel in downtown L.A. to become a Hyatt Regency

The Hyatt Regency brand is coming back to downtown L.A. The Marriott at 3rd and Figueroa streets will be renamed the Hyatt Regency Los Angeles Downtown in May.

The hotel at 333 S. Figueroa St. started life in 1983 as a luxury Sheraton Grande and later became the Los Angeles Marriott Downtown. The Marriott was foreclosed, and China-based Shenzhen New World Group Co. bought it in 2010. It ceased carrying the Marriott name in August and has been operating as the independent LA Hotel Downtown.

The aging hotel has been undergoing a $20-million renovation for more than a year to bring it up to Hyatt standards, a spokeswoman said. The upgrades bring new colors (red, orange and beige motifs) and design to the 419 rooms and 72 suites plus updated business and fitness centers, lounge, restaurants, ballroom and lobby.

Renovations to everything but the lobby are expected to be completed by May. Room rates will start at $179 a night, and the hotel already is listed on the Hyatt Regency website for online reservations.

Hyatt once operated a downtown hotel in Macy’s Plaza at Flower and Hope streets, which became a Sheraton in 2005.

The soon-to-be rebranded hotel joins the landmark Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Century City as the only two Hyatts in the city of Los Angeles. The Andaz West Hollywood and several other hotels in Long Beach, El Segundo, Garden Grove and other Southern California cities are part of the Hyatt family.
