Earning Capital One miles

The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card has a simple earning structure— 5 miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel and 2 miles per dollar on all other purchases.

While spending the $4,000 required to meet the sign-up bonus requirement, you’ll earn even more miles. If you don’t buy any travel and only utilize the 2X miles on all purchases, you’d rack up 8,000 additional miles. So, by the time you earn the welcome offer, you will have earned 83,000 miles in total (75,000 + 8,000).

If you utilize the 5X miles on hotels and rental cars through Capital One Travel, that number can increase exponentially. Let’s say you spend $1,500 on a week-long hotel stay, another $500 on a rental car, and $2,000 on other odds and ends to meet the $4,000 spending requirement.

You’d earn:

In this hypothetical scenario, you’d earn 14,000 miles. Add that to the 75,000 miles from the welcome bonus and you’re sitting at 89,000 miles. At the 1 cent per mile valuation, your earnings would ring in at $890 of travel.

Once you add the $250 limited-time travel credit, you’ll have pocketed over $1,100 in travel reward value within the first year.

Redeeming miles

There are various ways to redeem your Capital One miles, including:

While redeeming miles for travel bookings is often the most straightforward option, transferring miles to travel partners can sometimes provide more value.

For example, you can transfer miles 1:1 to Air Canada (Aeroplan), whose points are valued at approximately 1.4 cents each. That means 1 Capital One mile would be worth 1.4 cents.

Your 75,000 welcome offer miles would be worth around $1,050 in Aeroplan points.
